JP Colin was born in 1960 in a Southern California community rich in cultural gems. Being an area of political and economic neglect, it was also laden with existential challenges. Over many decades, he moved from a troubled home life to military service and on to community service and then to the study of Buddhism and ultimately to struggling to survive Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder related to his service in the military as an intelligence specialist/analyst. These unique experiences inform his art practice.
After struggling with severe PTSD for nearly three decades, and the severe mental illness of a loved one, he returned to university to study art, obtaining a BFA in Studio Art from New Mexico State University. In 2024, he graduated from the Royal College of Art in London’s MA program in Ceramics and Glass, and moved to rural Portugal where he operates his art practice and conducts arts business activities.
He considers the entirety of his life to be an ongoing work of narrative art.
